House rules are in my opinion important for me as a Dungeon Master to tweak the official game rules in such a way that they align with my own way of thinking about how the game should be balanced for fun and excitement as well as to remove or change rules that I generally find annoying or without any value add to the game I want to run.
Some house rules are of my own creation. These are very few. For the most part I have been picking and choosing other people’s house rules that I like and have merged them into my game. Some games or rather some gaming groups of people “the players” – like or dislike some of the house rules and I will therefore adjust which rules I implement depending on which group I am playing with.
Below I will display all of the house rules that I use and for the most I will write a few lines on why I believe that the house rule is a good fit for my play style.
Lastly I would highlight that I own a lot more rulebooks from various TTRPG systems – than I will ever be able to play in my life time. Many of these systems contain rules that I like and would like to play with in the games that I do get to play. D&D is the game that is most popular among my current play groups and therefore I will incorporate rules from other systems and use them in own D&D games – thereby also getting a feeling of infusing my games with great rules from other systems.
Insert house rules here. 🙂
